ColegauCymru welcomes new leader of the Welsh Conservatives in the Assembly

We congratulate Paul Davies on his new role as Leader of the Welsh Conservatives in the Assembly. Promises to be bold, impressive and alternative in his leadership to take the party forward, are encouraging as is Pauls objective to empower young people to use their skills and make a difference.

The new leader recently spoke to BBC Radio Cymru on Taro Post* of how Government needs to strengthen the role of colleges, to promote the benefits and widen access to vocational education across Wales. He urged colleges to remain relevant and to encourage young people to use their skills and become the new generation of entrepreneurs. Colleges in Wales educate, train and develop the skills of around 150, 000 learners year on year and are committed to the same agenda.

Iestyn Davies, Chief Executive of ColegauCymru, said Its encouraging to hear achieving parity of esteem for vocational and academia is a priority for the new leader. In touch with their civic mission, colleges are a key partner in achieving this vision, offering a varied curriculum and providing communities with opportunities to learn.

He continued Its important to remember, FE colleges are more often than not the place where learners go for a second chance, so we must consistently ensure healthy budgets for post compulsory education in order to provide our learners with progression paths.

Mr Davies concluded with the political landscape of Wales and the UK in a time of flux, it is imperative to keep the best interest of the learner at the centre of education policy decisions, providing progression and employability opportunities for Wales to prosper and flourish.

ColegauCymru Cross Party Group meeting of the new academic year is on 9 October 2018, discussing Funding for the Future in Ty Hywel. This is an invitation only event  if you would like to attend, please register your details at and an invite will follow shortly.
